Fallen
i. You taught me so much.
Handed out your pieces of wisdom
Like they were M&M's.
Told me all your "rules," how I should live my life
And I put my faith in your infiniteness
Believed in you, the way some believe in gods.
ii. Now you're everywhere I turn, 'cause
I see your face in strangers', and
Everything you taught me is now haunting me,
"All's fair in love and war," and
"When you love someone, they should be
The first to know."
iii. Leaning over the edge, unafraid
As though love's wings could catch me, I fell.
I fell from grace.
I followed your rules like religion.
And, for it, was crucified.
Your convictions were, in turn, my convictions,
And when you changed the story a part of me died.
"Sometimes it's better not to know."
That I could inspire such a change, such uncertainty...
I fell.
iv. "All's fair in love and war," but,
If this is war, then I'm losing
And if this is love, I have lost.
You know the truth now, and if you like,
We can pretend that you don't.
It might make things easier if I hadn't said anything
But you, and the world would be perfect again
If you'd just reciprocate, and
I've felt jealous before, and
I've felt longing before, but
I never knew what it was to be devoted
Until you taught me.
You taught me so much, and I believed it all, blindly
And everything you taught me is now haunting me
All those M&M's of wisdom that melted in the sun
I learned my lesson.
