When I was in Normal Saturday night, I pulled my Chicago Card out of my wallet and showed it to people like a 21-year-old on her birthday. At tht time, I didn't really think about it, but now I realize: I'm so happy to be here. I'm so happy to finally be here.
On the El, I had randomly picked up a copy of the Reader and discovered that CHUCK KLOSTERMAN would be reading from his new book tonight at Border's.
I called everyone I know in Chicago (all FOUR of them) to try to persuade them to come with me, but no one would. Actually, none of them had ever heard of Chuck Klosterman before. So, I went by myself.
As I was climbing out of the subway, I heard a girl on her cell phone say, "Oh, you know, he wrote Sex Drugs and Cocoa Puffs!" and my ears perked up and I said, "You're going to Border's to see the Chuck Klosterman reading!" And she was like, "Yeah!" And then we walked to Border's together, and looked for books together, and bought them, and then sat on the floor together to hear the reading, and then stood in line together to have our pictures taken and books signed.
Here are some facts that I learned about Chuck Klosterman at tonight's reading and "Q & A": 1.) He has a new book called Chuck Klosterman IV which is mostly a collection of previously published essays and columns from various magazines. (I will probably buy this book as soon as there's a paperback version.) 2.) He watches "Project Runway." 3.) He is weirded out by the fact that Seth Cohen reads Sex, Drugs & Cocoa Puffs in season one of "The OC."
I bought a copy of Killing Yourself to Live and he signed it, "Kellie, Stay alive. -Chuck Klosterman."
I am not even sure what I said to him when I handed him the book, except, "I just find you really insightful!" At least I didn't gush as much as when I met Amber Benson.
I am such a nerd. I should not be allowed around famous people.
