The Monologue Database
Helping Playwrights Promote Their Plays

Monologues | Mailing List | Submission Guidelines

Due to the volume of submissions received and the current back-log,
The Monologue Database is not currently accepting new submissions.

If you are a playwright, and you are interested in having a monologue posted on the Monologue Database, this page has all the information you need.

How does it work?

You submit your monologue, and the play it is from, in electronic format, via e-mail. If your monologue is right for the Monologue Database, the text of your monologue will be posted on the site and listed on the main page.

You decide if and how actors can read the complete play. You can provide the text for free (on your own site, or on this one). You can sell the copies, using a service such as PayPal, or any other method you choose. If your play has been published, (and the publisher gives permission for the monologue to be posted), you can provide a link to the publisher's website.

The bottom line is that submitting a monologue to our database will help actors to find your play. What those actors do next is entirely up to you. You decide the terms of use.

What kind of monologues does the Database like?

Obviously, we want great writing! Send us final drafts, not first drafts. I'm a Word Nerd, and typos will hurt your chances of being included.

We prefer plays with contemporary settings and natural-sounding, modern dialogue.

Monologues for young actors - especially women - tend to be the most popular ones. There's a lot of demand for monologues that are funny, but angry monologues are also very popular.

And finally, we prefer monologues that are part of full-length and one-act plays, rather than stand-alone pieces or one-actor shows.

Where do I send it and how?

Download the Monologue Database Submission Form. Fill it out on your computer. E-mail it to kellsbells@gmail.com, along with your script (in Microsoft Word or PDF format).

The subject line should be something like, "Monologue Database Submission," so it doesn't go to the Spam folder accidentally. I will write to let you know that your submission has been received, and I will usually respond to your submission within 2-4 weeks.
